“Well over 16 million Americans have rosacea—and most don’t know it,” according to the National Rosacea Society. It's common and complicated to manage. Identifying classic rosacea is easy, but identifying the more subtle forms is not—these will be some of the trickiest and most sensitive skin clients. Give them the wrong treatment or advice and you can exacerbate their rosacea, potentially causing hyperpigmentation, scarring and a very unhappy client. Give them the right advice and you have a loyal client and big fan who will help build your business. You need to be familiar with all the types of rosacea and know how to identify some of the more subtle signs. Learn the guidelines for choosing the right treatments and identifying when your clients need to see a dermatologist for prescription treatments.

Vitamin C: Multitasking Skin Care Active

During the18th century it was serendipitously discovered that British sailors were stricken with scurvy due to a lack of citrus fruits, and they soon became a staple for the sailors. Nearly 200 years later, it was actually synthesized in pure form. The biologically active form of vitamin C, or L-ascorbic acid, plays a key role in multiple biological functions. In the past 15–20 years, vitamin C has been shown to have multiple effects on skin, in both the dermal and epidermal layers. Details of these effects and the various uses in skin care and so-called ‘cosmeceuticals’ will be discussed, as well as methods to stabilize vitamin C and vitamin C derivatives. In vitro evaluations and human clinical studies mitigating UV-induced oxidative stress, as well as improvement of signs of skin aging will be presented.
