The Bare Facts Behind Using Acid Peels

Peter T. Pugliese, MD , Founder and President , Circadia by Dr. Pugliese

This presentation will introduce the esthetician to the science supporting the use of acid peels. It will explore why an unbuffered acid with a concentration 15% may be better than a buffered acid of 30% concentration. The need to know what pH really means in an acid used for peeling will be explained. Is the concentration of an acid more or less important than the pH? What is the meaning of the pKa, and how does it fit in with the pH value? What is the difference between a strong acid and a weak acid? What is the effect of buffering an acid, and what is a buffer? These questions will be addressed and answered in this presentation. The purpose of this session is to provide the esthetician with the essential knowledge to be able to select and use acids based on a clear understanding of what acid really are and how they work. Peak your peels with pKa! A handout will be available for attendees.
